Assembling a team that will function as a hard-working unit that gets things done has been difficult from the first time our distant ancestors tried it. Yet no significant job can be finished without a team.

This creates a problem, because teams are made up of people, and they don’t always fit together well. So how teams come together and become efficient and harmonious is of interest. The businesses or organizations employing them often have time, money and reputation invested to make sure the team works.

You often hear wise old managers, at workplaces, saying, “many hands make work light”. The wise saying best conveys the importance of team efforts at a workplace or business organization. In fact, the word, ‘TEAM’ can be expanded as “Together Everyone Achieves More”. You see, there’s no “I” in “Team”.

Actually, the success of a workplace or business organization depends on, the way its teams work, the way its teams perform. Thus, team building has become important part of business corporations. In fact, team building events are often considered as one of the most important corporate events.

I am in my office staring at a game ball with my name stamped on it, yet it’s not from any game that I played. It also has inscribed on it the signatures of some incredible people and they are not multi-million dollar NFL stars. Yet as I gaze at this ball, it brings tears to my eyes. It is a very special gift.

“What kind of team building can we do to get both sides of our business alliance working better together?” “How can we get them to trust us more?” “As partners, shouldn’t we be looking at the balance between risk and reward equally?”

These are just a few of the questions I’ve been asked in recent months. The answers, in my not to be popular opinion, are clear, succinct, and a wee bit blunt. Hang in there though. The recommendations that follow can make this pill easier to swallow. First, let’s debunk a few myths commonly associated with an alliance.

Just as there are many requirements in mentoring, there are just as many rewards. We frequently speak of the personal and intrinsic qualities that mentors bring to their relationships and the value of those qualities. The simple truth is that not everyone can be an effective mentor. The sharing of knowledge and experience are only two of the transactions that take place in a mentoring relationship. A mentor must also share vision, spirit, humor, mission, and wisdom that are only a short laundry list of essentials of mentorship.
